NT Young Achiever Award finalist Josh Harrington is marking Youth Week by recognising the role the St John NT Youth Program has played in his achievements, with the winner to be announced tonight.
Josh is a finalist in the FCD Health Young Achiever in Health Award, which recognises young Territorians making outstanding contributions to the health and wellbeing of their communities, highlighting emerging leaders committed to improving health outcomes.
For the 16-year-old St John NT Youth member, volunteering has been a foundation for both personal and academic growth.
From 2026, St John NT Youth members can earn recognised school credits while learning life-saving skills, with 23 of 25 Youth proficiency badges approved by the SACE Board for the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET).
“I’ve been a St John NT Youth member for seven years, and being able to have that count towards my studies is really rewarding,” Josh said.
“These skills go far beyond the classroom. Everything I learn as a volunteer shapes how I respond in real life.
“I’ve learned how to stay calm under pressure, work as part of a team, and help people in their time of need. It gives me confidence in my future and makes me excited to pursue a career in health.”
Josh said the program’s flexibility has made it easier to balance his commitments.
“I can volunteer more during holidays and scale back during exams, which makes it easier to manage school, sport and family life.
“I’d recommend the St John NT Youth Program to anyone who wants to build real-world skills, gain recognised credits, and be part of something bigger than themselves.”
Director of Volunteer Event Health Services Mark Ferguson said the program supports young people to build skills that extend beyond first aid.
“Our Youth members develop leadership, teamwork and resilience, alongside practical clinical skills,” he said.
“This recognition through the NTCET strengthens the pathway between volunteering, education and future careers.”
The St John NT Youth Program is open to young people aged 14–17, with a Junior Program available from age 8.
