MEDIA RELEASE: Scene change for Australian paramedics
  04 Mar 2022

St John NT is encouraging graduate and qualified paramedics across the country to experience the rich opportunities the Territory has to offer.

The Territory’s ambulance service has received funding from the NT Department of Health for 45 additional positions to provide relief from the impact of COVID-19 on service delivery.

These positions include 45 new paramedics and emergency medical dispatchers across Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs and will increase the operational staffing by 10%.

“We usually run two intakes over the course of the whole year. This drive means we will be recruiting throughout the year and running consecutive induction programs with only a two-week break between each round,” Director Ambulance Services Andrew Thomas said.

“This is a huge undertaking for our Clinical Services and Human Resources team, who will be screening potentially hundreds of applicants and running induction programs basically non-stop.”

The induction programs include ambulance driver training, manual handling and mass-casualty incident simulations.

St John NT’s recruitment campaign kicks off this week, targeting interstate paramedics who are looking for a new challenge in their career.

The campaign includes a social media video (https://youtu.be/MovIR42nzZY ) showcasing the unique career opportunities the Territory has to offer.

“While we understand this will be a challenging exercise, we cannot wait to see the fresh faces up in the Territory,” Mr Thomas said.

Working in the Northern Territory is an incredible experience for both qualified and graduate paramedics.

“Paramedics in the NT get exposure and witness things they wouldn’t get in any other service,” graduate paramedic Joshua explains why he made the move from the Gold Coast.

“Coming to the Territory has not only provided me the opportunity to become a paramedic and work within a field I love but it has opened my eyes to a different way of living. I didn’t know what to expect before I moved here but it’s definitely exceeded everything and has been the best decision I have made.”
