First aid is the initial care given to someone who becomes ill or injured.

First = initial or start - the first person on the scene

Aid = help or assistance

First aid skills are based on knowledge, training and experience.

First aid includes a range of treatments from simple procedures, like tending to a small abrasion, to critical care, like performing CPR. In some accidents first aid will need to continue until medical help, like an ambulance, arrives.

Any attempt at first aid is better than none at all, but without knowledge and training the idea of helping someone else in an emergency can be frightening.

Learning first aid with St John NT gives the skills and knowledge so you will feel confident to act in a potentially life threatening situation.
