Territory First Responders honoured for service excellence

Paramedics, staff and volunteers of St John NT have been recognised as role models within their profession and community at a special event hosted by Health Minister The Hon. Steve Edgington MLA at Parliament House this evening.

Awards were presented for demonstrating excellence in leadership or clinical practice while providing an outstanding level of care, professionalism and compassion for members of the Northern Territory community.

The St John NT 2025 Excellence Awards recognised the work of Paramedics, Emergency Medical Dispatchers, Patient Transport Officers, volunteers and support staff from all areas of the organisation.

St John NT CEO Andrew Tombs said the Awards were an opportunity to highlight the dedication and passion of those who act as mentors and leaders in the service, and who provide inspiration to others in how they care for the community.

“I am so proud of our staff and volunteers for what they do each and every day. Our staff and volunteers are committed to helping people in their time of need or providing them with the skills and confidence to know what to do in an emergency. No matter the role in the organisation, everyone understands that we are here to help,” he said.

Darwin Paramedic Rhys Dowell was awarded the Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise Paramedic of the Year Award for his excellence in leadership, professionalism, and clinical skill, earning the respect of colleagues, volunteers, and hospital staff alike.

The judges acknowledged Rhys for his ability to remain calm and offer clear guidance in high-pressure situations, supporting staff and volunteers while ensuring patient care remains the top priority. They said his presence reassured teams, maintained morale, and inspired confidence, even during complex incidents or large-scale events.

The Awards also recognised the outstanding contribution from two members of the service who have been with St John NT 35 years to the day.

“It is an honour to pay tribute to Craig Garraway and Michael McKay, who have dedicated their careers to St John NT and their community,” Mr Tombs said. “Thank you for your enormous contribution.”

The St John NT 2025 Excellence Awards are generously supported by Northern Territory Government, Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise, Australasian College of Paramedicine, Charles Darwin University, AANT, Area9, The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, ZOLL Medical Corporation, Ferno, Nine Darwin and Marsh.
