A custom-built, Territory-tough ambulance built by St John NT is hitting the outback roads of South Australia for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).
Collaboratively designed by St John NT and RFDS SA/NT, the ambulance is the first of its kind for South Australia, bringing improved access to and treatment for patients and slashing transport times.
St John NT’s Director of Commercial Services, Colin Southam, said the project provided a great opportunity to partner with RFDS and showcase the unique expertise our organisation has in remote emergency care.
“Our highly skilled vehicle services staff have delivered an exceptional, functional ambulance for our southern first responder comrades, and we are proud to have contributed to the care of interstate patients,” Mr Southam said.
Boasting the comfort and space of a Toyota HiAce and the robustness of a LandCruiser 200, the all-terrain ambulance also features state-of-the-art communications and medical technology, allowing for continuous support in the most remote locations.
RFDS SA/NT Manager Remote Area Clinics, Melissa Allen, said that the St John NT team had significant experience in providing emergency ambulance response in some of the country’s most remote areas.
“Whether off the beaten track or across rough roads, this ambulance brings timely, life-saving care directly to patients, no matter the location,” Ms Allen said.
Bound for the regional RFDS Community Health Clinic at Andamooka, the vehicle will provide emergency care to the outback opal mining town and surrounding areas, supporting approximately 150 patients per year.
