In the wake of the highest road toll in 10 years, St John NT has launched a new Motorcycle First Aid Course designed to teach riders and other road users the life-saving skills needed to respond to a motorcycle accident.
Representing 10% of our road fatalities and having an 18x greater risk of being killed or seriously injured than car drivers, motorcyclists are at a disproportionate risk on Territory roads.
The course focuses on equipping Territorians with the skills to manage common motorcycle accident injuries and provide crucial first aid until emergency services arrive.
The training covers vital skills for treating crush injuries and shock, and how to safely remove a helmet.
St John NT Clinical Services Manager and Intensive Care Paramedic, Geoff Bates, is an avid motorcyclist, and emphasised the course’s importance.
“Knowing community members are equipped with these skills will help riders like me feel safer, and enable bystanders to assist during those critical moments,” Mr Bates said.
“It’s about more than first aid; this course will give people the knowledge and confidence to act when every second counts.”
The course will be offered fortnightly from this Saturday, 8 March 2025, with additional dates available.
