St John NT has kicked off 2025 with the unveiling of a vibrant mural, celebrating the invaluable contributions of youth volunteers and paying tribute to the organisation’s long-standing youth program.
The mural created by local artist, Izzy Craven, commemorates two major milestones: 100 Years of St John youth in Australia, and the 70th anniversary of the Darwin Youth Division.
St John NT Volunteer Director, Mark Ferguson, said this year’s celebrations mark significant milestones for the organisation.
“The mural has captured the essence of St John youth beautifully and will be a lasting symbol of the dedication, spirit, and future of our St John youth volunteers”, he said.
“St John Youth Programs have taught first aid skills and leadership qualities to young Australians for 100 years, and Territorians for 70 years.
“Many of our youth volunteers have gone on to be healthcare professionals, including paramedics. The future is bright!”
The new mural is the result of a collaboration between St John NT youth volunteer, Chloe Ferguson, and local artist, Izzy Craven. The pair first connected during Youth Week 2022, where Chloe recognised Izzy's artistic talent and passion for the community.
Izzy, the Palmerston born and raised artist who conceptualised and painted the 100 Years of St John Youth mural, said the design was inspired by her own experiences with St John.
“Key elements include symbols of health, learning, and achievement: books, a stethoscope, and a trophy, alongside the iconic St John Johnny Bear and a youth member in uniform, which I think capture the essence of St John Youth,” she said.
“The mural is my favourite to date. It was so much fun to conceptualise and paint.”
Looking ahead, St John NT plans to continue its centenary celebrations with a series of special events throughout the year, including for the 70th Anniversary of the Darwin Youth Division.
These events will honour the history and evolution of the St John Youth Program, while looking forward to the next chapter.
