COVID-19 Advice No. 1
  16 Mar 2020

As the Territory’s leading provider of first aid and ambulance services we are committed to the health and well-being of all Territorians. St John NT is working with the NT Government to ensure that St John NT and the Territory health system are able to continue to respond to the community’s health and emergency needs, providing on going care for those who need it.

We understand that many people in our community may be concerned about the growing threat of coronavirus (COVID-19) and make a commitment to keep you informed about any changes to our services. The changes to our services will be based on expert medical advice of Australian Authorities and will focus on our commitment to the safety and well-being of our staff, our volunteers, our patients and our community.

First Aid Training

At this stage, First Aid training courses will continue as scheduled.

If you need to reschedule or cancel as a result of self-isolating due to COVID-19 you may do so at no additional cost. Please call (08) 8922 6200 or email training@stjohnnt.asn.au to arrange.

The safety and well-being of all our students and staff is our highest priority, a number of measures have been introduced to reduce the risk of contracting or spreading the virus, these include:

  • Boxes of tissues and appropriate places to dispose of them are available in our training rooms.
  • Hand sanitizer at all of our locations.
  • We encourage students and staff to wash their hands frequently with soap and water.
  • We are providing flexibility in some assessments such as CPR breaths and close contact activities.

During our First Aid training courses:

  • Gloves are available for students to use if requested.
  • We maintain a high standard of hygiene in the class, ensuring we have enough face shields, antiseptic wipes and hand sanitiser for students.
  • Face and mouth of the manikins are wiped with antiseptic wipes during practice and assessment
  • Lungs in Manikins are changed after every course.
  • Antiseptic hand sanitiser is available in our kitchen areas and bathrooms with additional signage added in these areas about the importance of hygiene.
  • We are following directives from Health.gov.au and are including their messaging in all our facilities.

Please note:

  • People who have travelled overseas in the 14 days prior to their course must not attend any St John NT training course.
  • People who have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) should also stay at home (self-quarantine) and not attend a St John NT training course for 14 days after last contact with infected individuals.
  • People who are diagnosed with a confirmed case of coronavirus within 14 days after attending their St John NT training course must advise St John NT immediately on (08) 8922 6200.

Good hygiene tips – from SecureNT

  • Use a tissue or your elbow to block a cough or a sneeze, keep your hands clean and avoid touching your face.
  • If you are unwell, contact your General Practitioner who will assess if you need to be tested for COVID-19 infection and arrange for to you to be tested – call ahead first as there may be protocols in place to prevent the spread of the virus.
