Just a short note to those contemplating separation from Defence or for Defence families new to the Territory – have you considered volunteering? TST_Virginia_D

When I paid off from Navy, my plans were to sit on a beach and play the occasional round of golf, something retiring Warrant Officers could become accustom to very easily. I had no intention of looking for another job or career but I thought I might get bored. I had time on my hands so I thought I would take on a hobby that would keep my mind active.

In the Navy I was a career communicator and my work environment was secure areas mainly concrete boxes with no windows and I had no idea what the world or weather was doing outside. I went looking for something completely different and ended up joining St John Ambulance as a volunteer. The St John work environment is outside, not sitting at a computer all day and a family atmosphere. I also became a student; that was an interesting transition from military instructor to student. Anyway I, and St John, survived and 13 years on I am still a volunteer.

Joining St John as a volunteer gave me many opportunities and the path I chose was to qualify as an Ambulance Officer. I had no medical background so it really was back to square one. I did however have all the training and life experiences of the Defence family and that enabled me to concentrate on the medical study.

I have no regrets about my choice of hobby and have been lucky enough to experience two family environments; Defence and St John. My only regret is the downward turn of my golf handicap!

If you have time on your hands and are looking for a challenge that gives back to the community, why not consider volunteering with St John. Give us a call and come and see what the family is up to.

Regards,
Virginia Dowson
Territory Professional Officer
