Hello to all,

Hope we have all had a good week, I know I have.

Vollie News 03 Jun 2010 4Thursday night at our meeting we had Steven Reubenson teach us the new Smart Triage system. As a prelude to talking about the Smart Triage System Steven showed us a Power Point presentation on “Managing incidents with multiple casualties” (goes to say that they both go hand in hand.) Can’t have one without the other.

I always wondered what was considered a mass incident; like you know, is it three, thirty or more? This question was answered within the first few slides.

A mass incident is defined as having more casualties then there are resources i.e. medical help, be it First Aid or Paramedic. Another interesting thing I learnt was an equation, although very simple it was something I had never thought about, especially as an equation. Equal casualties to resources + “Golden Hour” = Maximum survivors.

This is why in a Mass incident it is important to have as many hands on deck as possible. I know that if ever I have to use the smart triage system in such an incident that this system is easy to follow and you don’t have to be Einstein to be able to prioritise casualties.

The usual duties for Katherine over the week end. I wish I could make it sound so much more interesting but I’m afraid that’s it. I still would like to keep you up to date with these anyway, what else am I going to say otherwise haha.

Friday night Mitch covered the Under 18 Rugby games. I popped in for a social chat while the games were going on, thanks to Mitch for making this possible. Whilst I was there he treated a boy with a nosebleed. It was here that I left M itch and our little chat, as I’m sure he didn’t want to think that I was there to overlook his treatment, my visit was simply a social call as at the moment Steve is still in Darwin and Mitch wanted to give me the night off. Once again thanks Mitch for letting me have the night off.

Sunday there was Moto X, which was covered by Christine and Simone.

To my knowledge there were no casualties at this duty, excepting the riders that come off their bikes but keep on going with nothing more than a knock or a bump to their lap time. Thank you Simone and Christine for covering this duty.
