Ivan Danks Day PDF Print E-mail

What great community support we are getting here in Nhulunbuy. We have just had the Ivan Danks Day, similar to the Beer Can Regatta in Darwin. A little history is that some time ago a guy 20090820_NHU_Ivan_Danks_Daynamed Ivan Danks built a boat out of what he could find and sailed from Nhulunbuy.

At 10am on Sunday 16th August about 6 teams started building their boats out of ply wood. When they finished they were then placed on the beach to be raced at 4:30pm. While they were building their boats, games, relays and other boat races were played out on the beach.

Fundraising from the day was donated to St John Ambulance Volunteers by the Yacht Club. Throughout the day the community made donations and supported the volunteer divisions, both adults and cadets.20090820_NHU_Ivan_Danks_Day0

To help with the day we had Mark Ferguson, Superintendant of Adult division, Mandy Paradise, Superintendant of the Cadet division, Rob, Adult division and Kylie, Sergeant for the Adult division; we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

With donations from all the community shops we were able to hold a big raffle. Mandy and Rob from Arnhemland Craft and Picture Framing donated a local aboriginal painting that they framed; it was auctioned on the day.

A huge thank you for the hard efforts of our volunteers, Yacht Club (Tom), Mandy and Rob and all the other businesses that helped out on the day. Over $2000 was raised.
