Alice Springs Cadets 2 (8th April 2010) PDF Print E-mail

The 1st of February saw all 24 cadets fresh from the long break and ready for another busy year. There were lots of stories of holidays from all over Australia and even abroad, i.e. New Zealand.

Vollie News 08 Apr 20105One of our members was lucky enough to be selected to be funded to represent NT and from her 15 minute power point presentation and the gifts she brought back it sounds as if a good time was had by all. Kristy would like to extend a thank you to everyone involved, (especially the St John Council for the funding) in making it possible for her to attend. Vollie News 08 Apr 20104

After revision of the previous year’s work some ground rules were reviewed and enhanced upon it was then down to work, with the first two modules being completed before moving onto our first proficiency for 2010; this was to be Campskills. The plan is to hold a combined camp with the juniors, after riding our bikes 17 kilometers to Simpson’s Gap, camp over night and then ride the 17 kilometers back the next day. This is why the Juniors did the cycling interest badge and it is also why the senior cadets will be doing cycling next term to prepare for this ride.

So the Cadets had to plan everything, from equipment needed, safety and first aid requirements, food and a roster for cooking of same and communications. The acting NCO”s were asked to write a formal letter to our station manager and second in charge to ask for the use of an ambulance, sat phone and the bus for this camp. Also as part of this camp we are going to be helping the Juniors with their environment interest badge as well as erect a flag pole for each of the teams and arrange for a talk on the stars.

Due to the rains in January and March washing out the BMX track, we have only been able to attend one duty, the AFL, which saw the Crows take on Collinwood in what could only be explained as a washout. It rained from the time we arrived up and until the final siren of the game. This meant the Cadets sought refuge in the bus all evening in an attempt to stay dry. Of the 24 members mentioned earlier we have welcomed three new members and welcomed back one as well. These are Josh, Dimity and Duyem and returning is Jasmine.
