Last week, the Cadet Band and Darwin Cadet divisions were visited by a cadet from the Bath Cadet Division in the UK, Jack Torrance. Jack contacted me about 3 months ago to say that he was visiting Darwin and would like to deliver a presentation about St John in the UK. Jack's presentation included photos of various uniforms worn in the UK, the vehicles, headquarters, meeting room, his school and members on various duties in the rain and cold. Interesting facts: - School students in the UK learn first aid skills from St John cadets and first aid competition teams and individuals must be trained by cadets.
- A tie and jumper is part of the uniform and must be worn at all times. If it is hot, a cadet cannot remove his/her jumper
without permission. - The UK has the equivalent of our Youth Council which has two elected members from each cadet division.
- Juniors are called Badgers in the UK and can join from 5 years old. Juniors in Australia start at 8 years old.
The NT Cadets certainly enjoyed hearing all about the similarities and differences between juniors and cadets in the UK and Australia.
