Cadet Band Divisional Inspection and Awards Night (21st November 2006) PDF Print E-mail

On Monday, 30 October, the Cadet Band Division was privileged to have the company of not only the Division‟s families and friends, but also the Commissioner Mr Peter Poole, Territory Superintendent Mr Steve Peers, Territory Officer HR Ms Lesley King and former Band Superintendent Mr Frank Haydock.

1900 saw the ‘Band On Parade’ for the inspection and Commissioner’s Address. Numerous Proficiency and Interest badges were presented to the Cadets and Juniors before Sarah and Geraldine received their 200 hour Service Shield Awards. Next came the presentation of Medallions and certificates to the 11 members of the Band’s First Aid Competition Contingent. The Grand Priors Award was presented to Michael and Amy by both the Commissioner and Territory Superintendent, a testament to their high achievement. The final awards were the most anticipated.

By 1945 the guests and members were ready to retire to the air-conditioning in Training Hall 3. The Band began by playing the National Anthem followed by numerous other tunes including Eye of the Tiger. For many of the junior band members playing recorder, it was the first time they played in front of an audience and they did great!

A power point presentation of photos taken throughout the year accompanied by music was another highlight of the evening. It was a wonderful journey that covered the Cadets’ visit to Parliament House, Jan and her guide dog, Panda’s visit for the Eye Health and Animal Care badges, blind-folded drill practice, promotions, fundraising, meeting nights and camps. Brooke and Amy once again dazzled the audience with the cleverness of their presentation.

The evening ended with supper and free time to look at the numerous works on display in Training Hall. It was this room that held all the tangible work of the past year, the winning scale model of a castle constructed while completing Knowledge of the Order, the food pyramids from Cookery & Nutrition, and the reports on famous Australians prepared as a requirement of the Citizenship proficiency badge.

The year is not yet over. We have many more weeks to go. More classes, a Christmas party, public duties and more fund-raising opportunities. I hope to share more of Band’s exploits in the weeks and months to come.
