Due to expansion of existing customer contracts and the impending confirmation of new contracts for the provision of remote area paramedic services at various sites within Australia and overseas, a number of opportunities has arisen for both long and short term tenure appointments.

KEY PURPOSE

To provide efficient and competent emergency and non emergency medical assistance and treatment to a wide range of personnel in accordance with St John Ambulance Australia (NT) Inc Patient Management Procedures and Drug Protocols or as directed in accordance with consultation with nominated authorised medical authority. Officers are committed to continue to provide and promote improved clinical patient care competencies and maintain ongoing professional development for Officers relevant to site requirements.


ORGANISATIONAL ENVIRONMENT

St John Ambulance Australia (NT) Inc is the Territory ambulance service, a major provider of first aid training services, and the home of a large first aid volunteer network. The Contract Department is part of the First Aid Division within St John and provides a range of paramedic and first aid services on-site to mining corporations, off-shore platforms and specialised primary health care clinics on a contracted basis. Whilst this Department is separate from the Ambulance Service and the Training and Education Department, it works closely with these areas in order to ensure ongoing competency development for contract staff.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND OUTCOMES

  • Ensure prompt, efficient and skilled care and treatment for all patients within the attending Officers level of training and authorization to practice.
  • To establish and maintain in a secure location, accurate medical records for all personnel and patients attended to. To accurately enter into patient’s medical records date and time of attendance, the reason for attendance, treatment or advice given, including directives advised by Medical Officer, Medical Officers name, time of contact and directions given.
  • To maintain the allocated medical facility, the site Ambulance and site medical kits ensuring they are all clean, functional, adequately stocked for number of personnel on site, are easily accessible for use and in a state of readiness. Officers are required to assess the functionality of medical centre and medical stores to accommodate the number of personnel on site and treat anticipated conditions. All recommendations for change are to be notified to the site supervisor and Contract Coordinator.
  • To assist with maintaining ongoing health evaluations including being proactive with education to staff regarding health related topics. Medics will also be an integral part of training ERT members in understanding and the application of first aid.

Staff responsibilities may be varied by St John Ambulance Australia (NT) in order to allow the organisation to respond to operational needs or requirements.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The incumbent will receive general to broad direction from his/her supervisor and in the main, will determine his/her own priorities and work plans consistent with the objectives of the work unit. The incumbent is also expected to operate within a framework of established policies and work systems. Both specific and broad outcomes are reviewed.

SUPERVISION PROVIDED TO OTHERS

No supervisory responsibilities are required for this position.

The Contract Paramedic is expected to promote and provide a safe working environment with attention to the requirements of the Workplace Health & Safety Act NT 2007, the Work Health Act NT 2007 and Equal Opportunity legislation.


WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The incumbent is expected to consult with his/her supervisor on matters where activity cannot easily be determined by reference to past practices or established procedures.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • All Officers are to maintain a high level of personal appearance, hygiene and safety in accordance with all St John Ambulance Australia (NT) Inc and relevant site policies, regulations, procedures and protocols. All required personal protective equipment relevant to site is to be used in accordance with site requirements.
  • At all times maintain a direct and effective communication with Contract Manager. This will include regular reports stating duties conducted by medic while on site.
  • The Officer must maintain a current Drivers License of the appropriate class and be thoroughly conversant with and abide by the road rules and regulations pertaining to the operation of an emergency, clinic and ancillary fleet relevant to that site. Officer must report any vehicle defect to the relevant personnel as per site requirements and organize a replacement vehicle if deemed necessary to maintain medic in a state of readiness to respond.
  • At the completion of each swing each Officer is to supply the Contracts Manager with a summary report. This report is to include the number of patients treated, types of injuries or illness, any concerns or issues arising while on site, and any other relevant information.
  • Travel is an essential component of employment as a Contract Paramedic. Modes of travel may include light aircraft, sea-going vessels and / or various land transport options.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential criteria

  • High level clinical skills as evidenced by a current certificate to practise or similar as well as evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Demonstrated superior communication skills across all media.
  • Ability to solve problems effectively and efficiently, to resolve conflicts quickly, and to maintain collegial and harmonious relationships on all work sites.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work in a solo capacity as well as part of an on-road team.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination and functional capacity evaluation as well as commitment to maintaining high level health and fitness for work as a paramedic.
  • Clean driving record and current national police check (within three years).

Desirable criteria

  • Previous experience in working as a contract paramedic on a remote site.
  • Previous experience working in a cross-cultural environment.

SELECTION OF CANDIDATES

Candidates will be evaluated on merit against all of the various components that make up this position description. Assessment will take into account all information that is determined to be appropriate, eg written application, qualifications, interview, work samples, skills testing and referee reports.
