This training offers participants the opportunity to acquire/reinforce the skills required to initiate emergency care measures for ill or injured children until the emergency passes or advanced aid arrives. Caring for Kids focuses on the 0-8 year old age group.
The short training program is considered relevant for:
Parents/guardians of young children
Baby sitters
Child care workers
Grandparents

Training is delivered over 2 x ½ days; or 1 full day
Minimum age: 14
Mothers of babies being nursed are welcome to bring the child with them when they attend this course
Topics include: DRABCD Action Plan; resuscitation; the unwell child; wounds, bleeding, shock; burns; heat and cold emergencies; limb injuries; facial injuries; abdominal and pelvic injuries; poisons, bites and stings; spinal injuries and immunisation information
Caring for Kids is not equivalent to Apply First Aid.
Assessment:
Ongoing observation assessment of practical skills
A Statement of Completion ‘Caring for Kids’ is awarded following the successful completion of this training.
To maintain proficiency and current competence at this level of first aid training, St John (NT) recommends re-validation every 12 months.
