Previously called, ‘Senior First Aid’, this course (nominally 2 days), is considered the preferred basic level first aid training level by almost all industry which requires staff to hold a first aid qualification (such as Senior First Aid). The training is able to be delivered in a 2 day face-to-face format, or in a ‘Flexible Learning’ format – involving a recommended 4-6 hours of self-study and participation in a 1 day Practical Skill Workshop which also includes the standard ‘Apply first aid’ (previously Senior First Aid), assessment.
To ensure the most positive learning experience is offered for all learners, St John (NT) has established a maximum class/group size of 14 for any face-to-face component of Apply first aid course.
Apply first aid (previously Senior First Aid), aims to cover all of the critical first aid information and skills necessary to ensure participants are able to confidently and safely initiate (1) a first aid response, (2) basic life support and (3) situation management (including of the incident and bystanders or other first aiders), until the arrival of medical/advanced assistance Participation is restricted to persons 14 years of age and above
| Individuals or Groups who may consider this level of first aid training are those who: |
- need to achieve a level of fist aid training as part of their job to the standard that was previously called Senior First Aid by St John (NT)
- have previously completed an Accident Action course and would like to learn more about first aid
- may be in a position that could see them come across accidents/incidents
- wish to learn first aid skills which may useful to hold for employment purposes, and
- are interested in helping to promote health and well being in the community.

The training will assist learners to:
- Confidently and safely respond to a first aid emergency,
- Initiate a range of first aid measures using both standard and/or substitute resources,
- Call for help
- Communicate details of the incident; and
- Evaluate own performance
Topics include: Legal issues; infection control; DRABCD Action Plan; managing the unconscious casualty; resuscitation; defibrillation information; choking; first aid kits; shock; wounds & bleeding; burns; asthma; anaphylaxis; safety & injury prevention; fractures; sprains, strains & dislocations; head, neck and spinal injury; chest and abdominal injuries; facial injuries; heat & cold induced illness; poisons, bites and stings; diabetes and seizures. |
- Delivered in 2 day face-to-face format or ‘Flexible Learning’ format.
- Minimum participant age, 14.
- Maximum class/group sizes strictly applied.
- As with Senior First Aid, recognised as ‘current’ for a 3 year period.
- Alternative assessment approaches are available on request.
- Forms the pre-entry standard for many ‘advanced first aid’ programs

Assessment (in either format):
- Practical scenarios with use of observation checklists used by the assessor
- Written or verbal assessment involving 20 questions with learners required to achieve a minimum 16/20 standard.
- Supplementary assessments are available should the minimum achievement not be reached on the first occasion.
Prior to 1st July 2008 a Statement of Attainment for the Course in Senior First Aid 70108NT will be issued for successful completion of this training.
For all other enrolments after 1st of July 2008 successful participants completing this training will receive a Statement of Attainment HLTFA301B Apply first aid.
To maintain proficiency and current competence at this level of basic first aid training, St John (NT) recommends re-validation every 3 years.
