This training covers the learning needs of people requiring the provision of advanced first aid resuscitation techniques, life support, and management of casualty(s), until the arrival of medical or other assistance, and provision of support to other providers.

People and groups who should consider this level of first aid training are those who:
  • required to have this training as part of their job and have the necessary equipment available
  • wishing to gain additional skills which may help toward future employment aspects
  • interested in helping to promote the health and well being of the community

Pre-Entry Standard: (1) HLTCPR201A Perform CPR achieved within the last 12 months, or
(2) HLTFA301B Apply first aid (previously Senior First Aid) or recognised equivalent, achieved within the last 3 years, or
(3) HLTFA201A Provide basic emergency life support within the last 12 months.

The training will assist learners to:
  • Prepare resuscitation equipment for use
  • Apply bag and mask resuscitation techniques
  • Attach and operate an AED
  • Administer oxygen
  • Operate suction equipment
  • Restore and maintain equipment ready for future use

Topics include:
Prevention of infection when giving first aid; DRABCD Action Plan and resuscitation review; definition of terms in automated external defibrillation; safety when using an AED; preparation of the casualty prior to using an AED; use of the soft bag resuscitator; administration of oxygen; oxygen delivery systems; oxygen powered resuscitation; suction; maintenance of equipment.
  • This training is delivered over a half a day (4 hours) in face-to-face format
  • It is suitable for any person over the age of 14 years who have previously and successfully completed the pre-entry standard
  • This training is delivered face-to-face and may be delivered in 8 nominal hours

Assessment:
  • A practical skill assessment is undertaken throughout the training by way of checklist observation
  • Written assessment involving 15 questions
  • Learners are required to achieve a 9/15 (minimum pass score)
  • A supplementary assessment is offered to those learners who do not achieve the minimum score on the first attempt
  • Statement of Attainment HLTFA404A Apply advanced resuscitation techniques, is awarded following the successful completion of the training

Prior to 1st July 2008 a Statement of Attainment for the Course in Advanced Resuscitation 70103NT will be issued for successful completion of this training.

For all other enrolments after 1st of July 2008 successful participants completing this training will receive a Statement of Attainment HLTFA404A Apply advanced resuscitation techniques.


To maintain proficiency and current competence at this level of basic first aid training, St John (NT) recommends re-validation every 12 months
