This unit is delivered as part of the St John (NT) Occupational First Aid program. It is structured to meet the learning needs of people who as part of their first aider role are required to compete Occupational First Aid. It addresses establishing and maintaining facilities to promote the provision of first aid in the workplace.

People and groups who should consider this level of first aid training are those who:
  • have a specific ‘site’ First Aid responder function/role
  • are required to have this training as part of their job and
  • are responsible for operating first aid rooms;
  • wish to acquire further skills which may aid toward future employment
  • are interested in helping to promote the health and well being of the community

Pre-Entry Standard: HLTFA402B – Apply advanced first aid or recognised equivalent, achieved within the last 3 years (strictly applied) when delivered outside of the Occupational First Aid program

The training will assist learners to:
  • Establish, maintain and/or maintain a workplace first aid facility
  • Manage first aid records; and
  • Evaluate the provision of first aid in the workplace.
Topics include:
Risk assessment in line with OHS legislation/regulations; designing and setting up a first aid room; management of first aid rooms, facilities and personnel; management of first aid documentation; planning a response to a major incident; role of the first aider; medications; manual handling; workplace safety; triage; a major incident scenario; debrief a major incident.
  • As part of the Occupational First Aid program, this training is delivered over 5 consecutive days (40 hours) in face-to-face format
  • It is suitable for any person over the age of 14 years who has previously achieved HLTFA402B Apply advanced first aid (or a recognised equivalent credential)

Assessment:
  • Practical scenarios being conducted throughout the program using of observation checklists
  • Individual and group based desktop/paper activities
  • 20 Question written assessment requiring a minimum pass score of 15/20
  • A supplementary assessment is offered to those learners who do not achieve the minimum pass score
  • Statement of Attainment HLTFA403A Manage first aid in the workplace is issued to participants successfully completing the unit

To maintain proficiency and current competence at this level of first aid training, St John (NT) recommends re-validation every 3 years.
